Family Conflict and Suicide Risk

A new study conducted at the University of California, Davis, suggests that Asian Americans reporting family conflict were at three times greater risk for a suicide attempt than other Asian Americans. The risk was increased regardless of income, depression history, and gender. The researchers hypothesized that the emphasis on family harmony in many Asian cultures made it a more salient risk factor for suicidal thoughts or action. Previous studies have indicated that Asian Americans are at a higher risk for suicide than other groups, but did not specifically identify possible reasons. They hope to further investigate the particular kinds of conflict that contribute to the increased risk in order to prevent the problems. You can read more here.
